17 people killed in South Korea due to heavy rains and landslides (video)

In South Korea, due to heavy rains and landslides that have been going on for four days, 17 people have died and 11 more are missing. About this informs Reuters.

According to the local authorities, the southern district of Sanchon was the most affected, where 10 dead and 4 missing were recorded. Other deaths occurred in the cities of Osan and Gapyeong in Gyeonggi Province, Seosan and Danjin in South Chungcheong, and in the southwestern city of Gwangju. Rescuers said that search operations in Sanchon are ongoing, so the number of victims may change.

The downpours began on July 16, and have already forced the evacuation of almost 13,500 people from dangerous areas. According to forecasts of the National Weather Service, the rains should stop on Sunday, after which hot weather is expected. As of July 16, Sangcheon recorded 793.5 mm of rain, Hapcheon 699 mm, and Hadong 621.5 mm.

According to the authorities, about 2,000 cases related to road flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage were recorded. In addition, more than 2,200 incidents involved damage to private property, including residential buildings and agricultural land. Currently, more than 12,000 people are in temporary shelters in 14 cities and provinces of the country.
