Almost 98,000 cases of domestic violence were recorded in Ukraine in six months: Lubinets

In the first six months of 2024, 97,706 complaints about cases of domestic violence were registered in Ukraine. About this reported Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.

He noted that the problem of domestic violence remains serious, as many cases never become known due to the victims’ fear of abusers or condemnation from society. Domestic violence can take different forms and affect anyone, so the problem needs special attention.

The Ombudsman also emphasized the importance of ratifying the Istanbul Convention, which aims to prevent violence against women and domestic violence. According to him, this is an important step for Ukraine, which will ensure more effective protection of the rights of victims. Lubinets emphasized that this ratification was one of his key recommendations in recent years.

On May 9, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada supported the European integration draft law on preventing and countering domestic violence, which was voted for by 250 people’s deputies. According to official data, as of June 1, 2024, 1,521 proceedings were opened on this issue, which is 36% more than in the same period last year.
