Armenian parliament approves draft law on the start of EU accession

The Parliament of Armenia in the second reading and in its entirety supported the draft law, which starts the process of the country’s accession to the European Union. About this informs News Armenia.
During the voting, 64 deputies from the “Civil Contract” faction supported the draft law. The opposition faction “I have honor” voted “against”, while the “Armenia” faction did not take part in the vote.
The government also made a proposal to remove the preamble from the text of the law. The phrase “Armenia, expressing the will of the people” was replaced by the following version:
“Armenia, with the aim of developing democratic institutions, increasing the welfare of society, strengthening security, stability and the rule of law, announces the beginning of the process of accession to the EU”.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Paruyr Ohannisyan, noted that the approval of the draft law in itself does not mean submitting an official application for joining the EU.
“However, this indicates the desire of the citizens of Armenia to deepen the partnership with the EU on a new level and corresponds to the balanced foreign policy of the country”, he emphasized.
We will remind that on January 9, the Armenian government supported the draft law “On the beginning of the process of accession of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union” and submitted it to the parliament for consideration. On February 12, the National Assembly approved the document in the first reading.
