Romania’s newly elected president sworn in before parliament
On May 26, Nikushor Dan was officially sworn in as the President of Romania. The ceremony took place during the plenary session of the parliament, informs Digi 24.
On May 26, at 12:00 local time, the newly elected head of state was sworn in at a solemn meeting of the legislative body. Subsequently, the transfer of mandate took place – acting president Ilye Bolozhan officially handed over the powers to Nikushor Dan. During the oath, the president-elect put his hand on the Bible and the Constitution, promising to protect democracy and the people of Romania.
“Thank you for the impressive debates you have held over the last few weeks, no matter which side you support. People have spoken out, showing that they care about the direction Romania is taking. Society has shown that it is alive and strong. I invite you to continue participating with all the social power you have shown to put pressure on the Romanian state for reforms. I assure you that I will be a president, open to the voice of society”, – said Dan in a speech after taking the oath.
He also outlined among his top priorities education, health care, the judiciary, the economy, environmental protection and foreign policy.
We will remind you that last week the Constitutional Court of Romania officially approved the results of the presidential elections, which were won by the pro-European candidate Nikušor Dan. Before that, the court unanimously rejected the request of far-right candidate George Simion to cancel the election results, finding it “unfounded.”
