Biden commuted several thousand drug-related sentences

US President Joe Biden has announced commutations for nearly 2,500 people convicted of non-violent drug-related crimes. About this informs CNN.

“Those who face Friday’s measures are serving disproportionately longer sentences compared to what they would receive today under current law, policy and practice.”, – said Biden.

The statement also emphasized that the convicts were sentenced based on “discriminatory sentencing disparities for crack and powder cocaine crimes, as well as antiquated sentencing standards for drug crimes.”

We will remind that in December 2024, Biden commuted the sentences of 37 out of 40 people sentenced to death, replacing them with life imprisonment without the right of early release. The president attributed this to maintaining his moratorium on executions in cases not related to terrorism or mass murder.
