Biden declared June 6 the National Day of Remembrance of the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy

US President Joe Biden proclaimed June 6, 2024 as the National Day of Remembrance for the 80th anniversary of the landing of Allied troops in Normandy. This is stated in an official statement published by the White House.

“I urge all Americans to observe this day by participating in programs, ceremonies and events to honor the memory of those who fought and died so that other men and women, completely unknown to them, may learn what it means to be free.

On the evening of June 6, 1944, then US President Franklin Roosevelt addressed the country. At the time, World War II was raging in Europe, and Hitler controlled most of the continent. Freedom and democracy were persecuted all over the world. But on this day, on the beaches of Normandy, 73,000 American troops joined the Allied forces to carry out one of the greatest military missions of all time—a mission that would become known as D-Day.

Realizing that the fate of the free world rested in his hands, President Roosevelt asked our people to pray for the strength of these brave soldiers as they embarked on the great cause of the struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion and our civilization, and to liberate suffering humanity. On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we thank these servicemen for their courage and sacrifice. Let’s honor their heroism that freed the continent and saved the world. And let us rededicate ourselves to the future for which they fought and for which many of them died.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made on D-Day, we remind ourselves that freedom is not given in vain and was never guaranteed. Each generation must earn it, fight for it and defend it in the struggle between autocracy and democracy – between the greed of the few and the rights of the many. Eighty years after our nation’s brave airmen, Coast Guardsmen, sailors, soldiers and Marines embarked on the D-Day landings, and as Americans everywhere answered the call to prayer and filled their hearts and homes with hope, we honor the faith they preserved in our country, their legacy, we stand for the future they died for—a future based on freedom, democracy, opportunity, and equality for all.” – said US President Joe Biden.
