China reduced purchases of Russian wheat by 15 times

In the first half of 2025, the volume of Russian wheat exports to China in monetary terms has decreased sharply — from $38.9 million to $2.5 million, which means a drop of more than 15 times. This is reported by the Russian publication The Moscow Times.

In June, Russia did not export a single kilogram of wheat to China. For comparison, in the same month of 2024, the volume of supply amounted to $6.4 million. Such data is provided by the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China.

Against this background, Russian wheat lost its competitive position on the Chinese market. At the same time, China imported wheat from Canada for $361.3 million, from Australia for $190.2 million, and from Kazakhstan for $5.8 million. Last year, in 2024, Russian wheat exports to China reached $87.3 million — 2.5 times more than the year before.

A similar dynamic is observed in relation to Russian barley. In the first six months of 2025, the volume of its exports to China fell from $100.1 million to $42.2 million. In June, this indicator decreased more than 14 times — to $743.6 thousand. Instead, China bought $927.3 million worth of barley from Australia, $195.9 million from Canada, and $93.1 million from Argentina. In 2024, the export of Russian barley to China amounted to $177.1 million.

The only exception to the general decline was the export of corn: in six months of 2025, its volume doubled to $49.4 million against $19.9 million last year. In June of this year, deliveries increased to $19.7 million compared to $3.4 million in June 2024.
