The Government of Hungary demands to recognize all Transcarpathia as “traditionally Hungarian”
Hungary actively continues to put forward demands for the protection of the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine, in particular, the definition of “places with a special level of guarantee of rights” remains among the most common issues.
This is stated in articles “EvroPravdy”, in which the Hungarian demands transferred to Ukraine in January are given.
According to the article, Hungary demands the automatic recognition of all settlements in Transcarpathia as “traditionally Hungarian”, even if Hungarians have not historically lived there. This leads to conflicts, because according to Ukrainian legislation, “traditional” residence is less based on previous residence during the last centuries and percentage cooperation.
In addition, the Hungarian government is committed to scrapping the 10% population requirement in principle, insisting that any inhabited place where a Hungarian minority has ever lived should automatically be considered “Hungarian” territory
Hungary insists that Ukraine renounce the influence of local councils in the process of determining the status of settlements for the Hungarian minority and make the assignment of this status automatic. In addition, Budapest insists on using only the 2001 census data, despite the fact that after that time the number of Hungarians in Transcarpathia has almost halved.
Orbán’s government calls this block with 11 key demands for the entire complex, which concerns the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. He believes that the reduction of the share of the Hungarian population in Transcarpathia to a level below 10% is unacceptable.
