The EU wants to start negotiations with the US as soon as possible to prevent a trade war

The European Union wants to start negotiations with the United States as soon as possible regarding the tariffs planned by President Donald Trump. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Trade, Maros Šefčovych, on February 4. informs Reuters.

Speaking before a meeting of ministers devoted to discussing issues of trade and competitiveness of the EU, Šefčovych emphasized the need for “as soon as possible cooperation” and expects the official appointment of Howard Lutnik, Trump’s nominee for the post of trade minister.

“We are ready to engage immediately and hope that through this swift engagement we can avoid actions that could cause significant disruption to the most important trade and investment relationships on this planet.” – he noted.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized that the top priority for the EU executive is to work on the common interests of the EU and the US, particularly in the areas of critical supply chains and new technologies. During a speech in Brussels, she said that the European Union is ready for tough negotiations aimed at solving problems and laying the foundation for a stronger partnership.

We will remind that Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the deficit of the US trade balance with 27 EU countries and threatened to introduce tariffs on European goods.
