Counterfeiter who sold counterfeit banknotes in Kyiv to appear in court

Law enforcement officers detained the suspect back in the spring when he tried to hand over $30,000 in counterfeit currency in the center of Kyiv. Currently, he will appear before the court for the sale of counterfeit foreign and national currency in particularly large quantities. He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property, informs National Police.
Employees of the Department of Strategic Investigations of the National Police together with detectives of the Bureau of Economic Security documented several facts of the sale of fake banknotes. Together with an accomplice, the perpetrator sold counterfeit high-quality bills — 500 hryvnias, 50 and 100 dollars. Through acquaintances, they looked for reliable customers, to whom they sold fake money at a significant discount – from 35% to 65% of the face value. For example, 500 hryvnias of the 2011 model were sold for 70% of the real value, dollars and euros for 60%.
In a specific case, for 10,000 counterfeit dollars, the accused demanded 3,500 dollars of real currency. The total amount of confiscated fakes exceeded 2.3 million hryvnias in conversion. Investigators completed the pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings opened on the facts of sale and storage for the purpose of sale of counterfeit currency, committed repeatedly and on a particularly large scale in the territory of Kyiv region (Part 2 and Part 3 of Article 199 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the indictment was submitted to the court for consideration of the case on its merits. Meanwhile, the case of his accomplice from the Vinnytsia region is already pending in court.
