EU considers suspending Association Agreement with Israel over Gaza crisis

The European Union is considering a full suspension of the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel due to the military action in Gaza. This agreement covers close cooperation in trade and other areas, informsPolitician.
Several options for restrictive measures are currently being considered, including full or partial termination of the Agreement. Alternatives include excluding Israel from participating in EU programs for students and scientists, as well as reducing technical cooperation and memoranda of understanding.
A previous report by the European External Action Service noted that “there are indications that Israel is in breach of its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement”.
“In response to the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023, Israel launched an intensive military campaign involving the use of long-range weapons in densely populated areas, as well as severe restrictions on the entry and distribution of essential goods and services in Gaza,” – the document says.
The discussion of the project will take place during the meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of the EU countries on Tuesday, July 15.
It will be recalled that on May 5, the government of the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, supported the decision to intensify the attack on Hamas in Gaza, including the possibility of completely capturing the enclave and holding it. On May 19, Israel announced a partial easing of the blockade of Gaza and appealed to the UN to resume the supply of humanitarian aid, while announcing the start of “large-scale ground operations” throughout the enclave.
