EU General proposes to create a multinational UN mission to monitor the ceasefire in Ukraine

The Chairman of the Military Committee of the European Union, General Robert Briger, made a proposal to involve an international peacekeeping mission under the auspices of the UN to ensure control over the ceasefire in Ukraine. He noted that such a mission could include not only European military personnel, but also representatives from the countries of the Global South and the Caucasus, which would make it multinational and more effective.
In an interview with the publication World Briger emphasized that EU member states are ready to make a significant contribution to the creation of a peacekeeping mission. Monitoring the demilitarized zone along the front would require a significant number of troops, he said, and such a mission could require the presence of tens of thousands of soldiers.
The general also emphasized the importance of creating an executive mission with broad powers. This means that the military, which will be part of the mission, must have the right not only to monitor the observance of the ceasefire, but also to use weapons and receive air support in case of violations. According to him, this will make it possible to prevent the renewal of the conflict more effectively.
“At the moment, all this looks like a theoretical scenario, but its implementation can become real if the appropriate political decision is made.” Briger noted.
In addition, the general expressed doubts about US President Donald Trump’s plan to “freeze” the front line for a quick end to the war in Ukraine. He stressed that such an approach could lead to a long-term conflict, similar to the situation between North and South Korea, where a frozen demarcation line has caused long-term instability.
