The EU mirrors its own tariffs on the US for 90 days
The European Union is mirroring a 90-day suspension of its own tariffs on the United States. About this stated President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, commenting on Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily suspend customs restrictions.
“We took note of President Trump’s statement. We want to give the negotiations a chance. If the negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will come into effect.” she emphasized.
It was planned that the first measures in response of the EU to the American tariffs would come into effect on April 15. They came in response to Trump’s announcement of a 90-day pause and “substantial reduction” in tariffs on trade with 75 countries, although specific details of the move remained undisclosed.
“Clear and predictable terms are critical to the functioning of trade and supply chains”, – emphasized von der Leyen.
She reiterated her position on tariff policy, saying that tariffs are a form of tax that negatively affects businesses and consumers. That is why she “consistently advocates an agreement on zero tariffs between the European Union and the United States.”
“The European Union remains committed to constructive negotiations with the United States to achieve unhindered and mutually beneficial trade”, — explained the President of the European Commission.
At the same time, von der Leyen emphasized that the EU continues to strengthen the diversification of its trade partnerships, focusing on cooperation with countries that account for 87% of world trade.
“Finally, we are stepping up efforts to remove barriers in our domestic market. This crisis has clearly shown: in times of uncertainty, the single market is our anchor of stability and resilience.”, she added.
We will remind that on April 9, the member states of the European Union supported the initiative of the European Commission to introduce countermeasures against the USA. On the same day, Donald Trump announced a 90-day freeze on new unprecedented tariffs, but did not specify which countries and goods this decision would cover.
