Former Syrian President Assad and his family have been granted asylum in Moscow, Russian military bases are under threat

At the moment, the situation around the two military bases of the Russian Federation in Syria remains uncertain. Bashar al-Assad and his family have moved to Moscow, and his government is handing over power to the Syrian opposition. About this informs Reuters.

Russia has two key bases in Syria — the Khmeimim air base in Latakia province and the naval base in Tartus. They are strategically important for the Russian Federation, as they are used as a bridgehead for the transportation of military contractors, in particular the “Wagnerians”, to Africa and back.

The leaders of the Syrian opposition have now agreed to guarantee the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic facilities in Syria, according to Kremlin media sources. However, among pro-Russian military experts, there are serious doubts about the possibility of maintaining these bases in the long term.

Regarding the whereabouts of Bashar Assad, the representative of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna, Mykhailo Ulyanov, confirmed that the former Syrian leader is in Moscow with his family. Russia granted him and his family asylum on humanitarian grounds. By data The BBC said the plane believed to be carrying Assad took off from Latakia, then switched off its transponder and headed for Russia.
