The Canadian airline is canceling hundreds of flights due to the strike, thousands of passengers are stuck at airports

Canada’s WestJet Airlines has canceled 407 flights due to a strike by its workers, delaying about 49,000 passengers.

The strike has begun after negotiations between the airline and the trade union reached an impasse. WestJet said it was trying to reduce its operating fleet to 30 planes by the end of Sunday to minimize the impact of the strike on passengers.

Canadian Labor Minister Seamus O’Regan called on both sides to return to the negotiating table and find a compromise. However, as of late Saturday evening, the parties had not been able to reach an agreement.

Passengers whose flights were canceled are expressing their frustration and anger on social media. WestJet apologized for the inconvenience and promised to do everything possible to help affected passengers.

Details:

  • Number of canceled flights: 407
  • Number of affected passengers: About 49,000
  • The reason for the strike: Failed negotiations between WestJet and the workers’ union
  • Government response: Canada’s Minister of Labor called on the parties to compromise
  • Airline response: WestJet apologized to passengers and promised to help them
  • Update: WestJet continues to negotiate with the union in hopes of resolving the dispute as soon as possible and restoring a normal flight schedule.
