Green Transition Office launches in Ukraine to promote energy and climate protection reforms

Ukraine, with the support of the United Kingdom, has created a new unit – the Green Transition Office – to promote more effective implementation of energy and climate policies that will help Ukraine on its path to economic development and integration with the EU. The opening of the Office was attended by Yulia Svyrydenko, First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, and Martin Harris, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Ukraine.
The Green Transition Office will function as an independent advisory body to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, helping to implement reforms in energy and climate policy.
As part of the cooperation, a Memorandum was signed between the UK Foreign Office and the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine to strengthen partnerships for the implementation of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) until 2030.
‘We expect this Office to support the Ministry of Economy’s efforts to implement energy and climate policy and the steps needed to join the EU and achieve our decarbonisation goals. We are grateful to the UK government for making this office possible. I am convinced that it will help us implement the National Energy and Climate Plan until 2030,’ said Yulia Svyrydenko.
She reminded that the National Energy and Climate Plan until 2030 is a roadmap that integrates all climate and energy measures aimed at systemic transformation of the Ukrainian economy and is an important part of the European integration process.
‘This plan is a strategic document aimed at harmonising environmental, energy and economic policies for the sustainable development of Ukraine. We have developed it in accordance with the requirements of the EU Regulation and taking into account the best practices of the EU member states. Implementation of the NECP will contribute to the decarbonisation of Ukraine’s economy and attract investment during the post-war reconstruction phase. To do this, we need to develop a roadmap for attracting investment in the country’s decarbonisation,’ Svyrydenko stressed.
British Ambassador Martin Harris stressed that the UK is committed to supporting Ukraine in rebuilding its energy system, making it more sustainable, secure and technologically advanced.
‘We are helping Ukraine build a Net-Zero future and integrate into European energy markets. By providing expert advice and mobilising business, the Green Transition Office will help transform Ukraine’s economy,’ he said.
Through the National Energy and Climate Plan, Ukraine aims to
- reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% compared to 1990 levels;
- achieve a 27% share of renewable energy sources in total final consumption;
- Diversify energy sources so that no more than 30% comes from a single supplier.
