Saudi Arabia is preparing for a new round of indirect negotiations between the USA, Ukraine and Russia, scheduled for March 24. This time they are will pass according to the so-called principle of “shuttle diplomacy” — representatives of the American side will play the role of mediators between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations, who will be in different premises and will not be in direct contact.
About the upcoming meeting reported Volodymyr Zelenskyy, confirming that American diplomats will meet separately with representatives of Kyiv and with the Russian delegation. Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, was chosen as the venue for the negotiations.
According to American media, the United States will be represented at the negotiations by high-ranking officials. In particular, the Director of Political Planning under the Secretary of State Michael Anton, as well as staff members of National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and assistants to US Special Representative Keith Kellogg will participate. At the same time, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz will not go to Saudi Arabia this time, CBS News journalist Jennifer Jacobs reported with reference to sources.
Russia will be represented at the negotiations by Senator Hryhoriy Karasin and adviser to the director of the FSB Serhiy Beseda. It was these two politicians and officials who received a mandate to participate in meetings with American diplomats.
The Ukrainian side has not yet officially announced the composition of its delegation. The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tyhiy, clarified that the Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiga will not take part, since the agenda of the negotiations will be primarily military and technical issues, and not the political component.
According to the sources of The Washington Post, Defense Minister of Ukraine Rustem Umyerov and Deputy Head of the Office of the President Pavlo Palis will travel from Kyiv to the talks. The same officials participated in the previous round of negotiations, which took place on March 11 in Jeddah.
We will remind you that the previous meeting in Jeddah took place according to a similar scheme – without direct contacts between Ukraine and Russia. At that time, the Ukrainian delegation was headed by Andrii Yermak, Defense Minister Umyerov, Foreign Minister Sybig and Deputy Head of the President’s Office Palis also participated.
