International conference on demining in Ukraine takes place in Switzerland

The Ukrainian delegation arrived in Switzerland to participate in the Conference on Mine Action. About this reported Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in his Telegram channel. He emphasized the importance of this event for attracting international support in the process of demining Ukraine.

The Prime Minister expressed hope for concrete agreements to be reached during the event, and also noted that a meeting with the leadership of Switzerland is planned to discuss bilateral cooperation.

“We are attracting maximum help from partners in order to clear Ukraine of Russian mine waste as soon as possible. We are waiting for concrete agreements at the end of the conference.” Shmyhal noted.

The Ukraine Mine Action Conference (UMAC2024) will be held on October 17-18 in Lausanne under the slogan “People. Partners. Progress”. Representatives of 50-60 countries, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and businesses will take part in the event. The main topic of discussion is the key role of humanitarian demining in the social and economic recovery of Ukraine.

It is worth reminding that the government of Ukraine recently simplified the procedure for disposal of ammunition, allowing the use of mobile complexes for disposal directly in demining zones. This decision is designed to speed up the process of cleaning the territories from dangerous explosive remnants of war.

Among the important demining initiatives is the pledge by Australian philanthropist Andrew Forrest and his ex-wife Nicola, who through their Minderoo Foundation have committed 5 million Australian dollars (over $3.2 million USD) to demining projects in Ukraine.

Also, the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine concluded an agreement with the American company Palantir Technologies, which plans to use artificial intelligence to assist in the process of demining Ukrainian territories.
