Gaudí became interested in architecture and drawing while still at school, and in 1870 he moved to Barcelona to enter the local university to study architecture. He spent several years preparing for admission, while simultaneously working as a draftsman for local architects.

The individuality of his worldview manifested itself quite acutely even when Gaudí was a student. He hated analytical geometry with its straight lines and angles. Instead, he was fascinated by curvilinear forms and the variety of living nature, from which his unique style, diverse in form and color, grew.
