Military environmentalists were trained to collect evidence of the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant

Representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine underwent training on documenting the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP caused by Russian troops. During the training, military ecologists mastered the method of collecting evidence regarding the negative impact of this war crime on the environment, informs press service of the Ministry of Defense.

Specialists of the Center of Excellence for Mine Action and Environmental Safety conducted sampling of environmental components using equipment provided by international partners. The experts of the Center transferred the knowledge gained during the training to the representatives of the State Environmental Inspection of the Southern District, which covers the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

The training took place within the framework of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in Ukraine. Organizational support was provided by the Belgian “Nicole Foundation” and the NGO “Institute of Public Policy and Consulting”.

We will remind that on June 6, 2023, Russian troops committed one of the largest environmental crimes of the 21st century – they blew up the Kakhovskaya HPP dam. As a result, more than 75,000 hectares of land were flooded.

The devastating flood destroyed the habitats of many species of animals and plants, and led to pollution and clogging of large areas. A significant amount of pollutants, toxic substances and petroleum products got into the soil. In addition, the flood washed away thousands of mines and explosive objects that were buried under the soil layer, creating additional threats to the environment and human safety.
