The operator of Ukrainian gas storage JSC “Ukrtransgaz”, which is part of the “Naftogaz” group, plans to urgently purchase an additional 100 million cubic meters of imported natural gas in the amount of up to 4 billion hryvnias (including VAT). This is reported by ExPro.
“Ukrtransgaz” announced the purchase of 25.6 million cubic meters of gas with transfer to the customer in gas storage facilities. The purchased resource must be imported to the customs territory of Ukraine in the period from February 12 to 28. The starting price of natural gas was 29,103 hryvnias per thousand. cubic meters (without VAT), which is approximately equal to $700 at the current exchange rate. The company expects to purchase natural gas for delivery in February-March to increase the volume of its own buffer gas in underground storage.
“Such an emergency purchase of gas shows the difficulties with gas reserves. Why would Ukrtransgaz buy now, when already in the spring it could buy much cheaper than buying now at the peak of prices.” — noted the ex-head of LLC “Operator GTS of Ukraine” Serhii Makogon.
We will remind that before the beginning of the heating season, the head of Naftogaz, Oleksiy Chernyshov, assured that the autumn-winter period of 2024-2025 will be completed solely at the expense of Ukrainian gas. He also noted that the company created a small stock of imported gas, purchased with funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), but did not clear it through customs.
