OpenAI has raised a whopping $6.6 billion in the largest venture funding round in history, raising the company’s valuation to an incredible $157 billion. About this informs Axios publication.
The round was led by Thrive Capital, led by Joshua Kushner, with participation from notable investors such as Microsoft, Nvidia, SoftBank, Khosla Ventures, Altimeter Capital, Fidelity, Tiger Global and MGX.
OpenAI is expected to transition to a commercial structure that will allow investors to demand a refund if the transition is not completed within two years. It is noteworthy that Apple, although it held negotiations regarding a possible investment, did not participate in this round.
This round of funding surpassed the previous $6 billion raised by Elon Musk’s startup xAI earlier this year.
As for OpenAI itself, it is gradually transforming from a non-commercial laboratory into a full-fledged commercial company that focuses on creating products. That’s certainly attractive to investors, but sources say the transformation has led to some internal strife, including staff attrition. Just last week, CTO Mira Murati and two top researchers left the company, citing conflicts between product development and security teams.
Axios notes that internal disputes at OpenAI over the balance between development speed and security concerns have intensified since the firing and reappointment of CEO Sam Altman. However, the company vehemently rejects any accusations of reducing attention to security issues, even despite the transition to a commercial model.
