Pre-Christmas records at the Ukrainian borders: queues, statistics and realities of crossing

On the eve of the winter holidays in Ukraine, there is traditionally an increase in the number of border crossings. For many, this is a time to reunite with relatives, celebrate abroad, or an opportunity to resolve personal matters. However, the pre-Christmas period of 2024 has set new records: in recent days, border guards have recorded an incredibly high passenger flow, and checkpoints are working in a busy mode. The increase in the number of border crossings, queues and the need for prompt response make this topic particularly relevant for Ukrainian refugees. How the crossing process is organized, which checkpoints are the busiest, and what the border guards advise – reports IA “FAKT”.
New records: figures that are impressive
For data According to the State Border Service of Ukraine (SPSU), as of December 21-22, 2024, the number of state border crossings exceeded 150,000 people in two days. As of December 24, border guards recorded 127,000 crossings of the state border. The number of people who entered Ukraine (69 thousand) exceeds the number of citizens who left the country (58 thousand).
These are record figures for this year, which proves the high demand for departure on the eve of the holidays. In particular, the new checkpoint “Nyzhankovichi-Malkhovichi” on the border with Poland received more than 4,000 people, about 1,000 cars and 27 buses in just two days.
Lviv region became one of the leaders in terms of passenger traffic, showing a 25% increase compared to the previous period. The highest congestion was recorded in the Polish direction, especially at the “Korchova” and “Medyka” checkpoints. These data indicate the importance of the Polish border for Ukrainians, who choose it as the main route for travel.
Longest queues: where to wait longer?
According to the DPSU, the largest number of crossings is recorded at the border with Poland, which is quite predictable. There is a significant accumulation of traffic, especially buses, at certain checkpoints. For example, there is a queue of nine buses at the Shegyna checkpoint, and six buses at the Krakivka checkpoint. At the same time, such points as “Ugryniv”, “Rava-Ruska” and “Smilnytsia” work without queues, which makes them attractive for quick crossing.
The situation on the border with Slovakia is also tense. The checkpoint “Uzhgorod” accepts a significant number of cars, which leads to queues of 35 cars, and at “Malay Berezny” there are another 30 cars in line. However, checkpoints such as “Mali Selmentsi” remain free.
At the Hungarian border, the queue is maintained only at the Tisa checkpoint, while others, such as Kosyno and Luzhanka, operate without delays.
The border with Romania and Moldova shows the least congestion, there are practically no queues. This may be due to the lower popularity of these destinations among Ukrainians on the eve of the holidays.
How to avoid delays?
For those planning to cross the border, there are several ways to avoid long waits. DPSU recommends using the official Telegram channel, where up-to-date information on the state of queues at each checkpoint is regularly published. Updates are issued twice a day – at 9:30 and 18:30, which allows you to choose the most convenient route.
The “eCherga” system also helps to minimize waiting time. Drivers can register in advance to plan their time and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Green card and health insurance: must-haves for travel
When traveling abroad by car, do not forget about the “Green Card” policy. This is not only a mandatory requirement, but also a guarantee of your safety. The policy covers damages to third parties in the event of an accident and gives you peace of mind while traveling.
It is also important to take care of health insurance. In European countries, it is necessary to receive medical assistance in case of injuries or illnesses. This is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for a safe stay abroad.
What does the future hold?
Ukraine is actively working to improve border crossing conditions. Six new checkpoints are planned to be built by 2030, which will greatly relieve the existing infrastructure. This will be an important step in ensuring a comfortable and fast crossing for everyone going abroad.
The pre-Christmas period is always accompanied by an increase in passenger traffic, and 2024 was no exception. The situation at the borders remains tense, but the organization of the process, regular updates from the State Security Service and the introduction of new tools, such as “eCherga”, help to minimize difficulties for travelers. When planning your trips, you should take into account the busyness of checkpoints, use available services and choose the least busy routes for a comfortable border crossing.
