Rubio explained the reasons for the US agreement to negotiate with Russia in Riyadh

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, that Washington agreed to direct negotiations with Russia to assess its readiness for a peaceful settlement of the war that Moscow has unleashed against Ukraine.
“At the end of the day, we have to maintain a relationship with Russia, whether we like everything they do or not, as we did with the Soviet Union, and we have to be able to see if they are serious about ending this war.” – noted the state secretary.
He clarified that no details of a potential peace agreement were discussed at the meeting in Riyadh.
“The conversation was: firstly, we have to – at some level – streamline the work of our diplomatic missions, because we have to be able to communicate with them given the nature of our two countries and the importance that we have in the world. Second, there are things that we could cooperate on geopolitically, potentially.” Rubio explained.
At the same time, he noted that only time will tell the seriousness of Russia’s intentions regarding the peace agreement:
“I can’t answer yet whether they are serious about peace or not. It will depend on how they act next. The only thing we have agreed on is that we will talk about peace.”
