SBU detained a Belarusian KGB agent who was collecting data on the deployment of Ukrainian troops

Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine broke off an attempt by the Belarusian special services to obtain intelligence information about defense facilities on the northern border of our country. As a result of preventive measures, an agent of the Belarusian KGB was detained in the territory of the Volyn region, who was collecting data on the deployment of Ukrainian troops.
The investigation established that the detainee is a 24-year-old local resident without official employment who was looking for quick earnings through Telegram channels. Hoping to receive money from the Belarusian special services, he agreed to perform their intelligence tasks. Among them is monitoring the location of checkpoints and fortifications of the Defense Forces along the northern section of the border.
In addition, on the instructions of the curators, the person involved tried to detect the movement of military echelons that run on local railway tracks or are at transit stations of Ukrzaliznytsia. In order to collect information, he visited certain areas, fixed defense objects and plotted their coordinates on Google maps.
The SBU promptly exposed the agent’s activities, documented his actions and detained him at his place of residence. During the search, a mobile phone with an anonymous chat in the messenger, through which he was in contact with an employee of the Belarusian special service, was seized from him. His identity has already been established by Ukrainian counterintelligence.
In the course of the special operation, the protection of military facilities and logistical routes of the Ukrainian Defense Forces was also strengthened. On the basis of the collected evidence, the detainee was declared suspect under part. 2 Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — treason committed under martial law. He is currently in custody. For what he committed, he faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Operational actions were carried out by SBU employees in the Volyn region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor’s office.
