‘Standard procedure‘: the UN comments on Guterres’ visit to the BRICS summit in Russia

The Deputy Spokesman of the UN Secretary General, Farhan Haq, said that the participation of Antonio Guterres in the summit of the leaders of the BRICS countries is a usual practice for the head of the UN. About this informs “Ukrinform”.

According to Gak, the participation of the Secretary General in events such as the BRICS, G7 or G20 summits is a standard procedure, as these organizations bring together a large number of influential member states. He also emphasized the importance of this meeting for the cooperation of the UN with the BRICS countries, which represent approximately half of the world’s population.

The Secretary General plans to use the opportunity of the summit to hold a series of bilateral meetings with the leaders who will participate in the event, which will allow strengthening cooperation between the countries.

It will be recalled that on October 21, the aide to the Russian president, Yuriy Ushakov, announced that Vladimir Putin will meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, which is being held in Kazan.

This fact caused a sharp reaction from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which condemned the decision of the UN Secretary General to accept the invitation to the summit organized by Russia.

The BRICS summit, which is held in Kazan, is the 16th in a row and brings together countries with developing economies, as well as demonstrating a growing influence in the world. Representatives of 36 countries and six international organizations, including the UN Secretary General, are expected to participate in the three-day event.
