Tens of thousands of people join protests in Belgrade

In Belgrade, tens of thousands of protesters gathered in front of the RTS state television building to silently honor the memory of the victims of the collapse of the railway station roof, for which they blame the Serbian authorities. About this informs Euronews.

The organizers of the protest were students of the University of Belgrade, who insist on bringing to justice those responsible for the tragedy that claimed the lives of more than a dozen people. Activists Lazar and Luka Stoyakovichi, students of the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, became the central figures of the protest.

“Corruption has penetrated all layers of our society, and this is the main reason for the collapse of the roof and the death of 15 people”, – said Luka Stoyakovich, explaining why they are protesting.

The students accuse President Aleksandar Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party of corruption and nepotism, which the authorities categorically deny. The students’ demands include the disclosure of documents related to the reconstruction of the station and criminal prosecution of the officials responsible.

We will remind that for several weeks, students of state universities in Belgrade, Kragujevac and Niš block the educational process, organizing short actions of memory. Every day, they stop traffic in front of their faculties for 15 minutes to honor the dead.
