The European Union has changed the terms of extension of anti-Russian sanctions

The Council of the European Union decided to extend the new regime of sanctions against Russia for a period of 12 months, which will be in effect until October 9, 2025. These sanctions are aimed at countering hybrid threats from the Russian Federation. This is stated in decided of the Council of the EU, published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The document states that the decision will be regularly reviewed and the sanctions may be updated or changed depending on the achievement of the objectives.

“The decision is valid until October 9, 2025. It will be constantly reviewed and may be extended or changed if the EU Council considers that its purpose has not yet been achieved.” – says the message.

Sanctions will be reviewed at least once every 12 months, as well as at the request of any member state, the High Representative of the EU or the European Commission in case of fundamental changes in the situation.

Previously, the EU extended sanctions every six months, but a new mechanism was introduced on October 8. According to it, the blocking of the assets of Russian individuals and legal entities is maintained, and any attempts to circumvent the current sanctions are also prohibited.

The new sanctions regime against Russia was created to combat hybrid threats. As journalist Rikard Jozvyak previously reported, on October 2, EU ambassadors approved this new mechanism, which came into effect on October 8. Back in June, the European Council condemned the growing hybrid threats from Moscow and called for speeding up the development of a new sanctions regime to neutralize them.
