Textbooks with an incorrect map of Ukraine will be removed from schools: Ministry of Education
On September 9, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine decided to recall from schools Ukrainian language textbooks for the 7th grade, in which a map of Ukraine without Crimea was printed. About this informs press service of the ministry.
The Ministry of Education and Culture obliged the “Litera LTD” publishing house, which is responsible for printing the textbooks, to reprint the new edition at its own expense. In addition, the ministry will introduce the approval of textbooks in schools before they are printed in order to avoid similar mistakes in the future.
The incident occurred in a Ukrainian language textbook for the 7th grade (authors Anastasiya Onatiy and Taras Tkachuk), where a map of the country without Crimea was printed next to the text of the national anthem of Ukraine. The co-author of the textbook, Anastasia Onatiy, reacted to the situation, explaining that there was an unpleasant mistake with the use of a picture from stock images.
Against the background of this scandal, the “Litera LTD” publishing house made personnel decisions: the chief designer was fired, and other employees involved in the publication of the book were reprimanded with fines.
“The situation with the icon of Ukraine without Crimea, which is not an educational, but a decorative element in the textbook “Ukrainian language. 7th grade” occurred due to a technical error by the designer and an oversight by the editors during the final preparation of the publication for printing. We admit our mistake and withdraw all textbooks from schools, instead we will print a corrected edition at the expense of the publishing house and provide educational institutions with new textbooks.” — is emphasized in the company’s message.
