The designer of the tallest building in the world wants to turn skyscrapers into batteries
The American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP (SOM), known for its iconic project of the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, presented an innovative concept of building skyscrapers capable of accumulating energy using gravity.

Inspired by Energy Vault Holdings Inc’s technology, which offers an alternative to lithium-ion batteries, SOM has developed a series of prototypes where massive blocks are lifted by electric motors, creating potential energy. This energy can be converted into electricity when the blocks are lowered, providing the building with a renewable energy source.
It is noted that this approach is similar to the principle of operation of pumped hydroelectric power plants and is a significant step in the direction of reducing the carbon footprint of buildings, which account for almost 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The Swiss company, which specializes in long-term energy storage, is actively looking for partners to implement this technology in global construction. The company recently completed its first major project in China – an autonomous energy storage system with a capacity of up to 25 megawatts.
Other companies are also exploring the potential of gravity energy storage systems using abandoned oil wells and mines.
