EU and the world

The EU officially supported the call for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

The European Union has joined the US initiative to introduce a complete ceasefire in Ukraine for at least 30 days as a possible first step towards the start of the peace process. This is stated in the official statement on behalf of the entire EU, the full text of which is made public on the website of the European Council.

The document emphasizes the EU’s unwavering commitment to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

“We join Ukraine and international partners, including the United States, in calling for a full and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days.” – the document says.

The statement also emphasizes that such a pause in hostilities can contribute to reducing the suffering of the civilian population and create the conditions for meaningful negotiations on real peace.

“As in the past, it is Russia that must demonstrate its readiness to achieve peace”, – added in the statement.

The statement was also supported by some EU partners who are not members of the bloc: Moldova, North Macedonia, Norway, Ukraine and Great Britain. Their support was recorded during the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers held in Lviv on May 9.

We will remind that US President Donald Trump, after a conversation with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi on May 8, said that ideally he would like to achieve a 30-day unconditional ceasefire.
