The European Commission recommends that Ukraine revise the current regulation related to martial law

Director General of the European Commission for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (NEAR), Gert Jan Kopman, believes that Ukraine should review the current regulation related to martial law. That’s what he’s about stated during the conference “Accession of Ukraine to the EU: formation of the transformational agenda”.

According to him, the imposition of martial law has affected democratic procedures due to security challenges, but it is important to assess the feasibility of these restrictions.

“Obviously, Ukraine will return to constitutional normality after the war is over and martial law is lifted. But I really advise you to study the necessity and proportionality of the restrictions of martial law that are in effect now. Study in detail.” Kopman noted.

At the same time, he did not specify which aspects of military regulation, in the opinion of the European Commission, may be subject to possible changes.

We will remind that recently the special representative of the US president for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, said that Ukraine should be ready to hold elections during the war, because this is “a sign of a healthy democracy.”
