Germany has officially started a long-term deployment of its military unit on the territory of Lithuania. This decision is of historical importance and is aimed at strengthening NATO’s eastern flank in response to threats from Russia. About this informs Political.
On April 1, a ceremony took place near Vilnius, during which the German 45th armored brigade, numbering 5,000 troops, was deployed. During the event, the coat of arms of the new unit was presented, its temporary headquarters was approved, and the name of the commander – Brigadier General Christoph Huber – was announced.
“We have a clear mission: to ensure the protection, freedom and security of our Lithuanian allies on the eastern flank of NATO. At the same time, we also protect the territory of NATO – and Germany itself.”, – emphasized Huber.
The idea of a permanent presence of the German brigade in Lithuania was voiced back in 2023. In this way, Germany actually departed from the previously announced principle of avoiding the permanent basing of combat forces abroad.
The brigade is expected to reach full combat readiness by 2027 and will be based in a new military town in Rudninkai, about 30 kilometers from Vilnius. In the meantime, the military will be temporarily stationed at existing Lithuanian bases.
The brigade will include not only combat units, but also medical units, a communications company and rear support groups of the command. Currently, 150 German soldiers are stationed in Lithuania. By the end of the year, their number may increase to 500.
“This is a historic moment for Lithuania and NATO. It is a clear signal to Russia that we are ready to defend every inch of the Alliance’s territory,” — emphasized military expert Linas Koyala.
