Almost 30 tons of dead fish: ecologists announced the scale of damage due to river pollution in Chernihiv region (video)

More than 28 tons of dead fish were removed from the Seim and Desna rivers in Chernihiv region during the month, from August 26 to September 24. The cause of the mass death was water pollution caused by the discharge of sugar molasses from the Tyotkin sugar factory, located in the Kursk region of Russia. About this told head of the State Environmental Inspection in the region, Serhiy Zhuk, in a comment for Suspilny.
According to preliminary calculations by ecologists, the damage caused to the environment is 338 million 16 thousand 551 hryvnias.
Currently, polluted water from the Seimas has already reached Desna, in particular in the area of the village of Velike Ustya of the Sosnytsia community. Serhiy Zhuk noted that the level of chemical oxygen consumption (COC) in Desna reached 39 mg/m³ against the norm of 30 mg/m³. Although this deviation is not yet critical, such indicators indicate the deterioration of the river’s condition, since an increase in HSC means an increase in oxygen consumption by water, which negatively affects its ecosystem.
“Currently, the indicator of chemical oxygen consumption in Desna is 39 mg/m3 against the norm of 30 mg/m3. The numbers are small, but it is clear that the process of “river disease” is taking place. That is, if the HSK increases, it means that the river absorbs more oxygen, its becomes less than necessary”Zhuk noted.
We will remind that the first report about the repeated pollution of the Seim River in Sumy Oblast appeared on September 17. According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the death of the fish was caused by water pollution with organic substances.
On September 22, pollution from the Seim River reached Chernihiv Oblast, in particular, in the area of the Baturyn community. Although experts note the deterioration of water quality, it is expected that the new pollution will not be as large-scale as the previous one.
