The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine launched a new body — the space policy department. Its purpose is to establish cooperation between the military and representatives of the public, private and scientific sectors working in the field of space. About this stated Deputy Minister of Defense for Digital Development Kateryna Chernogorenko at the Space For Ukraine forum.
She emphasized that according to the current law on space activities, the Ministry of Defense is responsible for policy formation in the field of military use of space. It is not only about the purchase of technological solutions or the creation of an expert community, but also about the potential formation of space forces.
“We have a law on space activities, which says that the Ministry of Defense should form a policy in the field of military space. This is not only the purchase of innovative solutions from engineers, it is not only the creation of a community so that the best solutions come to Ukraine, but also the creation of space troops.” – stressed the Deputy Minister of Defense.
Chernogorenko noted that the Ministry of Defense aspires to become the main national customer of space products, equipment and services, and the newly created administration will play a key role in coordinating interaction with all industry participants — from engineers to scientists.
“It is important for us that everyone who works on space technologies knows how to communicate with us — have access to digital channels and contacts. This administration will be a kind of center of coordination, content creation and policies.” she said.
The official also said that by 2030, Ukraine plans to launch national satellites for military purposes, create an aerial warning system and control space.
We will remind you that in January 2021, the government approved the concept of the national space program for 2021-2025. It provides for the creation of about two thousand new jobs and an increase in the number of specialists in the field of space technologies.
