The Ministry of Education plans to reduce the number of medical universities

Students of medical specialties must first acquire basic higher education at classical universities, and only then continue their studies at powerful medical faculties. Such an opinion expressed Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Mykhailo Vynnytskyi.

He noted that there are only four medical universities in Europe, while there are as many as 15 in Ukraine. In his opinion, over time, the medical community will come to the conclusion that medical faculties within classical universities are more competitive compared to individual medical educational institutions.

“We don’t have any short-term plans for medical education institutions to suddenly become part of some classic universities. We will get there in an evolutionary way.”, the official said.

Vynnytskyi also noted that the forced implementation of this idea is not planned in the near future. However, according to him, specialized medical universities are a legacy of the Soviet system, which needs gradual reformation.

“It would be more useful for quality for us to have strong medical faculties within classical universities. This is because an 18-20-year-old young person can benefit more from the large selection of subjects that a classical university can provide. And then further narrow down their activities in the medical faculty and practically study”, – emphasized Vynnytskyi.
