There are currently 42,000 persons in the Unified Register of Persons Disappeared Under Special Circumstances. This was reported by Dmytro Bogatyuk, the head of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Issues of Persons Disappeared Under Special Circumstances. transmits “Ukrinform”.
“In general, since the beginning of the registry, information on more than 51,000 people who were considered missing under special circumstances have been entered into it. Today, this number includes people who are currently wanted. We have about 42,000 of them.”, – said Bogatyuk.
He also noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs has data on about 7,000 people whose whereabouts have already been established.
“These are more than 3,000 people who are alive and well. The vast majority of them are our former prisoners of war. Currently, we also have about 4,000 identified bodies. Most of them are our defenders who were considered missing, but were identified.”, — informed the representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Bogatyuk emphasized that more than 90% of proceedings on the fact of disappearance are investigated by the investigators of the National Police. He noted that it often happens that a person who is considered missing under special circumstances is later confirmed as a prisoner.
Separately, Bogatyuk drew attention to the problem that the Ministry of Defense does not take DNA samples from military personnel who are sent to the combat zone.
“If the issue with the National Police, the National Guard, the State Border Service is more or less resolved with the help of international partners and the Red Cross, then this problem still exists in the Ministry of Defense”, he remarked.
As reported, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is the holder and ensures the work of the Unified Register of Persons Disappeared Under Special Circumstances.
