The number of cases of domestic violence in Ukraine increased by almost 80% during the year: Prosecutor General’s Office

The number of cases of domestic violence in Ukraine over the past year has increased by almost 80% compared to the previous period. About this stated Iryna Shurkhno, head of the domestic violence department of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
To date, 8,185 criminal offenses related to domestic violence have been registered, with more than 5,000 victims. Most of the victims are women and children.
Shurhno also emphasized that the problem of domestic violence may increase in the conditions of war. However, the increase in the number of appeals to law enforcement officers indicates an increase in the level of public trust in state structures.
To help victims, law enforcement officers actively cooperate with state and communal support services, as well as with public organizations. Victims are provided with comprehensive support, including medical, socio-psychological and legal assistance. Victims can also find temporary shelter in shelters, crisis rooms and other specialized centers.
Despite this, the Attorney General’s Office emphasizes that many victims continue to live with abusers without seeking help, considering domestic violence to be a personal problem. Such silence can lead to serious consequences for the life and health of the victims.
