The number of convicted servicemen increased by almost 150%

The Supreme Court of Ukraine made public statistics of court proceedings in 2023 of criminal cases, in particular, regarding military personnel. Compared to 2022, there is a significant increase in the number of military offenses, and the number of convicted servicemen has increased by almost 150%.
In general, in 2023, courts convicted 5,339 servicemen of various criminal offenses (2,138 in 2022). This is almost 150% more than in 2022.
Most often, military personnel were convicted of voluntarily leaving a military unit or place of service (Article 407 of the Criminal Code) – 1,577 cases (an increase of 52.2%), or disobedience (Article 402) – 689 cases (an increase of 4.4 times). Avoidance of military service by self-mutilation (Article 409) is also common – 32 cases (an increase of 68.4%). Violation of the rules for handling weapons (Article 414) – 35 cases (increase by 52.2%) and negligent attitude to military service (Article 425) – 13 cases (increase by 2.6 times).
Punishment:
- 508 servicemen received punishment in the form of service restrictions (127 in 2022). This is 4 times more than in 2022.
- 676 servicemen received punishment in the form of detention in the disciplinary battalion (in 2022 – 115). This is almost 6 times more than in 2022.
Avoidance of mobilization:
- 930 people received sentences for evading mobilization (Article 336 of the Criminal Code). This is 5 times more than in 2022.
- 28 people received sentences for evading military registration (Article 337 of the Criminal Code). This is 2.3 times more than in 2022
