The number of Ukrainians who went abroad and did not return last year has increased 3 times: Opendatabot

According to the State Border Service of Ukraine, in 2024, Ukrainians crossed the state border 30.11 million times. At the same time, about 2% of those who left did not return — that’s about half a million people, informs The opendatabase.

The difference between those who left and those who returned was 443 thousand, which is 3.3 times more than in 2023, when this figure was 134 thousand. The largest outflow of citizens was recorded in June 2024, when 194,000 people remained outside the country.

Only three months of 2024 showed positive dynamics of return: in April, more than 58,000 people returned to Ukraine, in July – more than 23,000, and in August – more than 89,000.

In total, during the three years of full-scale war, about 3 million citizens remained outside Ukraine. This is almost the same indicator as in the previous 11 years – from 2011 to 2021, when 3.3 million people left the country.

We remind you that the statistics of the State Border Guard Service cover only official checkpoints. There is currently no data on Ukrainians who left the temporarily occupied territories or left illegally.
