The President of Romania announced his resignation

On February 10, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, whose second and final term ended in December, announced his resignation. This was done to avoid a political crisis surrounding his tenure, informs Hotnews.ro.

Iohannis was due to leave office on December 21, 2024, but due to the annulment of the presidential election, the Constitutional Court allowed him to remain in office until the start of the new president’s mandate.

Despite this, he announced his decision to retire early. This happened after the opposition parties submitted a request for his removal for the third time. The joint chambers of the Romanian parliament were expected to vote on the issue on Tuesday.

Iohannis said his resignation will take effect on Wednesday, February 12. He explained his decision by wanting to avoid political instability, as a vote for his removal could cause further development of the crisis.

“In a few days, the Romanian parliament will vote for my removal, and Romania will be in crisis because a referendum will be announced. All this will have internal and external consequences.

In order to save Romania and its citizens from this crisis, from this senseless and negative development, I am resigning from the post of President of Romania. I will leave my position the day after tomorrow, February 12. God bless Romania!”, – said Johannis.
