The procedure for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship has been simplified for husbands and wives of the military

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, signed a law that provides for a simplified procedure for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship for husbands and wives of military personnel defending the state. Text of Law No. 4191-IX published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

It is about the “Draft of the Law on Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on the Settlement of the Issue of the Right to Obtain Ukrainian Citizenship for the Second Spouse of a Citizen of Ukraine Who Takes (Participated in) the Protection of the Territorial Integrity and Inviolability of Ukraine, as well as on Certain Other Issues Related to Citizenship, Immigration, and the Legal Status of Foreigners and Stateless Persons.”

This right is granted to the husband or wife of defenders who serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations. The right also applies to the husband or wife of a citizen of Ukraine who died while performing official duties or died as a result of performing them (for example, in a hospital after a serious injury). For this purpose, the spouses of defenders of Ukraine must submit a declaration of renunciation of foreign citizenship.

To obtain citizenship under a simplified procedure, the husband or wife of a military serviceman must submit a declaration of renunciation of foreign citizenship.
