The Romanian authorities announced the exposure of the preparation of a coup d’état

The authorities of Romania announced the detention of six people on suspicion of treason and preparation for the overthrow of the constitutional order. About this informs Digi24.
The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism DIICOT arrested six people on suspicion of treason and plotting a coup d’état. According to the investigation, since 2023, the suspects created an organized group whose goal was to undermine the sovereignty and independence of Romania, in particular, to weaken the country’s defense capabilities by political means.
They systematically worked on the implementation of their plans, in particular, they repeatedly contacted “representatives of a foreign power” both in Romania and in Russia. To do this, they visited the Russian Federation several times, where they discussed their plans to seize power in the country.
The investigation believes that the suspects sought to withdraw Romania from NATO, change the constitution and state symbols, liquidate political parties, form a new government from close associates and completely reboot state institutions. The group actively sought supporters through social networks and distributed its own content.
Among the suspects is 101-year-old retired Major General Radu Teodoru, a World War II veteran, who was also searched. These developments come amid a political crisis in Romania and rising tensions ahead of a repeat presidential election scheduled for May 2025.
