Security Service of Ukraine exposed the agency network of military intelligence of Hungary, which engaged in espionage activities to the detriment of our state.
The purpose of this structure was to obtain information about Transcarpathia’s defense capability, to identify weak points in ground and air defense, as well as to study the socio-political attitudes of local residents, in particular, the scenarios of their behavior in the event of an invasion by Hungarian troops.
As a result of special operations in Transcarpathia, the SBU detained two Hungarian intelligence agents. The investigation established that both figures were managed by a staff member of Hungarian military intelligence, who has already been identified. One of the agents was a 40-year-old former military man from the Berehiv district, recruited in 2021. It was “activated” in September 2024.
It is documented that the traitor personally scouted the locations of the defense forces and the positions of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems. After gathering intelligence, he went to Hungary to report to the curator, having issued the documents of the caretaker of the sick father. During the meeting, the agent received cash for the realization of the set goals, and also engaged in the search for new informants. Attempts to recruit at least two more people have been established.
The agency network was planned to be expanded to collect information not only in the rear, but also in front-line areas. In March 2025, the SBU recorded another meeting of the agent with the curator, during which he was given a phone with special software for encrypted communication. Among the new tasks are the recording of service vehicles of the defense forces, the collection of data on the losses of the Armed Forces, and the transfer of current information from the front. The agent already had a relevant contact among the military.
The second detainee is a former military officer who resigned in 2025. She transmitted information about the presence of aircraft in the region and the defense system of the unit where she served. Counterintelligence documented the actions of the agents and made an arrest at the place of residence. Phones and other evidence of espionage activity were seized during the searches.
The extras were charged with suspicion under 2 Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — treason under martial law. They were taken into custody. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment with confiscation of property. The SBU continues measures to bring to justice all those involved in this agent network. The operation was conducted under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General.
