The selection committee for the director of the BEB must propose a new candidate: Shmyhal

Defense Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said that the Commission for the selection of the director of the Bureau of Economic Security should submit a new candidate for consideration. About this informs BBC.
According to the minister, the members of the government did not support Tsyvinskyi’s candidacy when they received the commission’s decision on his election. Shmyhal himself noted that he “abstained” during the first vote on July 7, when he was still the prime minister.
“I heard data that caused me reservations, it related to issues of national security and, accordingly, I refrained.” — explained Denys Shmyhal.
The minister also stated that he does not consider the situation with the non-appointment of the chosen candidate to be unusual, since the government acts as a “collegial body”.
“When the number of votes is not enough, then we have an appropriate result. This does not mean that the Cabinet of Ministers wants a new competition. In my opinion, it means that the commission should submit other candidates. Resubmit one or two. There, the law gives the commission options on how to act in such cases.” Shmyhal noted.
We will remind, during the online meeting on July 30, the Commission for the selection of the director of the BEB announced the end of its mandate, as it chose the candidate – Oleksandr Tsyvinskyi. The head of the commission, Laura Stefan, emphasized that it fully meets the requirements of the current legislation, and a repeat competition is not foreseen.
In addition, the commission reported that it had received a letter from the Security Service of Ukraine with information about reservations in connection with the Russian citizenship of Oleksandr Tsyvinskyi’s father. However, according to the commission, this circumstance was known as early as 2023 and was not a reason to limit Tsyvinskyi’s access to state secrets.
The appointment of the new director of the BEB should take place by July 31, 2025 in accordance with the Memorandum on Economic and Financial Policy between Ukraine and the International Monetary Fund.
