EU and the world

The UN has released the number of confirmed civilian casualties in Ukraine during the war

Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, according to the UN, more than 12,300 civilians have died as a result of Russian aggression. Another 27,800 were injured. This was stated by Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, during meeting UN Security Council.

Nakamitsu noted that Russia’s use of long-range weapons caused the most casualties among the civilian population. In November, such attacks resulted in 42% of deaths and injuries, which is significantly higher than in previous months.

She also cited data from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission for 2024. According to these data, from January to November 2024, as a result of airstrikes, 341 civilians were killed and 1,803 people were injured. This is three times more deaths and six times more injured compared to last year.

The UN takes into account only confirmed cases of death, but the Ukrainian authorities estimate the losses to be much higher. In Mariupol alone, according to Ukrainian officials, 20,000 to 25,000 civilians could have died during the fighting.
