The Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution on elections after ensuring “sustainable peace”

On February 25, the Verkhovna Rada adopted resolution No. 13041 “On supporting democracy in Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression,” which emphasizes the impossibility of holding elections during martial law. The document states that presidential elections will be announced after ensuring “comprehensive, just and stable peace” in Ukraine. About this reported People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
The decision was supported by 268 parliamentarians. In its resolution, the Verkhovna Rada emphasized the importance of continuity of power, especially under martial law. The document also emphasizes that the responsibility for the impossibility of holding free, transparent and democratic elections in Ukraine, which would meet international standards, lies with the President of the Russian Federation, Volodymyr Putin.
“Parliament notes that the martial law imposed in Ukraine under the conditions of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation does not allow elections to be held in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine. At the same time, the Ukrainian people are united in the fact that such elections should be held after the end of the war.” – says the document.
In addition, the resolution states that Volodymyr Zelenskyi will continue to exercise his powers until the newly elected president takes office in accordance with the first part of Article 108 of the Constitution of Ukraine.
“The VRU reminds once again that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi was elected in free, transparent, democratic elections. His mandate is not questioned by the Ukrainian people and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.” — specified in the document.
After establishing a “comprehensive, just and sustainable peace” in Ukraine, the parliament will announce presidential elections and ensure that they are held in accordance with international election standards.
