There will be no more free housing for refugees in Slovakia

The Slovak government will no longer pay for housing for Ukrainian refugees. The corresponding decision was adopted on the submission of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country. Subsidies for housing will stop being charged as of July 1. However, these changes will not affect everyone – some Ukrainians will still be able not to pay for housing rent.
Free housing for only 120 days
Starting next month, citizens of Ukraine with protection status will be able to live in free apartments or houses only during the first 120 days after arriving on the territory of the Slovak Republic. Further, free housing will be provided only to refugees who belong to vulnerable categories of the population.
Who can still not pay rent
To the list of vulnerable categories of refugees the government of Slovakia introduced the following list of citizens:
- persons with serious health disorders (people with disabilities) who are granted a subsidy to support humanitarian aid;
- families receiving assistance in case of extreme need;
- persons who have reached the age of 65;
- a single mother and a single father who independently cares for a child under the age of 5, or a person who personally cares for a child under the age of 5 on the basis of a court decision (guardian).
What in other countries?
Newly similar solution adopted by the government of the Czech Republic. From September 1, Ukrainian refugees will be able to live in social housing for free only during the first 90 days after arriving in the country. Migrants who belong to vulnerable categories will be able to receive monthly partial monetary compensation for housing rent (about 6,000 kroner per month). It is also possible for refugees to receive one-time emergency emergency assistance due to an extraordinary event, such as loss or threat of loss of housing.
Earlier, the introduction of the so-called “90-day policy” was announced in Ireland. Ukrainian refugees will be able to use housing in the country free of charge only for 90 days after their arrival.
