Which of the Ukrainians need a visa to Europe: restrictions on the visa-free regime

Since the introduction of the visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union in 2017, millions of Ukrainians have been able to travel to European countries without hindrance. However, not everyone can take advantage of these privileges. Although visa-free travel significantly simplifies travel for holders of biometric passports, many categories of citizens are still faced with the need to obtain visas. This article examines who exactly needs a visa, what types of visas there are, and what is required to apply for them.

The visa-free regime allows you to stay in Schengen countries for up to 90 days in every 180 days. However, this regime is limited to tourist trips, short-term business visits and participation in cultural or sports events. For other purposes, such as work, study or long-term residence, an appropriate visa must be obtained.

Categories of Ukrainians who need a visa

  1. Lack of biometric passport. Citizens who still use old-style foreign passports cannot use the visa-free regime. To travel to EU countries, they need to issue a Schengen visa, even if it is a short-term trip.
  2. Long stay. If the goal is to stay in EU countries for more than 90 days, the visa-free regime does not apply. For such cases, a national visa or residence permit is required, which are issued according to the purpose of the trip.
  3. Work or study. Visa-free does not allow official employment or study in educational institutions of the European Union. For this, you need to get special work or student visas.

Types of visas for Ukrainians

The European Union offers different types of visas depending on the purpose of the trip:

Schengen short-term visa (type C): Suitable for tourism, visiting relatives, short-term business visits. The visa allows you to stay in Schengen countries for up to 90 days.

National long-term visa (type D): Necessary for residence for more than 90 days, study, work or reunification with family.

Transit visa: It is necessary for a short-term stay in transit countries on the way to another state.

The process of issuing a visa

To obtain a visa, Ukrainians need to collect a package of documents, which includes:

  • Valid foreign passport;
  • A completed visa application form;
  • Two current photographs;
  • Medical insurance with coverage from 30,000 euros;
  • Documents confirming financial capacity (bank account statement, certificate from the place of work);
  • Confirmation of the purpose of the trip (accommodation reservation, invitation, tickets).

Depending on the type of visa, additional documents may be required. For example, for students it is a certificate of enrollment in an educational institution, and for employees it is an employment contract.

So, the visa-free regime has greatly facilitated travel for millions of Ukrainians, but it is not a universal solution for all needs. Many citizens are still forced to issue visas depending on the purpose and duration of the trip. Understanding the requirements and rules will avoid misunderstandings and ensure hassle-free travel planning or moving to EU countries.
