Poverty, insecurity, the desire to return: the realities of Ukrainian refugees in Poland and Moldova

A survey conducted by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has shown that many Ukrainians in Poland and Moldova are facing serious financial difficulties.

For the results poll, 71% of respondents in Moldova and 80% of those working in Poland do not have enough income to support themselves and their families. This forces them to rely on humanitarian aid, which diminishes over time.

Many refugees also feel insecure about their future. 43% of respondents in Moldova and 44% in Poland do not know what to do next.

The majority of Ukrainian refugees are women, children and the elderly. It is especially difficult for them to adapt to life in a new country. Many women cannot find work because they do not speak the language or do not have the necessary qualifications. Children are forced to go to schools where they do not understand the language, and the elderly feel lonely and isolated.

Despite the difficulties, many Ukrainian refugees still hope to return home. 27% of respondents in Moldova and 26% in Poland plan to return to Ukraine someday.

The NRC calls on the governments of Poland and Moldova, as well as the international community, to provide more support to Ukrainian refugees.
